Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is
seeking a Specialist Poison Information V for the New Jersey Poison
Information and Education System/Preventive Medicine and Community
Health for the New Jersey Medical School. Responsible for the
telephone management of the exposed patient, providing consultation
on care, as well as triaging and providing drug and poison
information. The specialist also responds to calls on the New
Jersey State AIDS / STD Hotline, providing information, resources
and referrals. The Poison Specialist must be able to demonstrate
the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to
the age of the patients served on his or her assigned shift. The
individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and
development of the life span and possess the ability to assess data
reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate
information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative
to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as
described in the departmental policies and procedures. Among the
key duties of this position are the following: Responds to
telephone calls regarding appropriate care and treatment for acute
poisoning and toxic exposures. Demonstrates understanding of
principals of toxicology when suggesting patient management or
providing poison information. Specialists will acquire the skills
to operate the telephone system, microcomputers and their
peripherals and the backup systems. Obtains a complete history
specific to each call. Properly assesses the severity of calls to
the poison center and properly decides on follow up. Listens well
and allows caller to define the problem to efficiently manage and
coordinate care. Overview New Jersey’s academic health center,

Preferred Qualifications Some clinical experience is preferred but
not required. Experience in Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and
Critical Care is preferred.
